Ucc Awards Northern Uganda’s Best Filmmakers

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) recently concluded the Northern Uganda edition of the Regional Short Film Competition, marking a significant milestone in the commemoration of 10 years of the Uganda Film Festival (UGF).

The competition, which began on May 8, 2023, at Acholi Inn Hotel in Gulu City, showcased the talent and creativity of filmmakers in the region.

The Odong brothers, Ojok Odong and Okello Odongo, emerged as the winners for their captivating film titled “Home,” which highlights the region’s stunning tourist destinations.

As pioneers in the Northern region’s film industry, the duo received well-deserved recognition in the form of an award and a cash prize of Shs2 million.

Notably, the Odong brothers have established themselves as versatile filmmakers, having worked on various film, theatre, TV, and documentary projects across East Africa.

Their collaboration with Signature Films and Benchmark Film for the creation of “Home” underscores their dedication to storytelling and their commitment to producing exceptional content.

Francis Ageta’s film titled “The Pride” secured the second position, earning him a cash prize of Shs1 million and a certificate. Susan Akumu’s film, “Dero,” secured the second runner-up spot, showcasing the region’s rich pool of talent.

During the award ceremony, William Nyombi Thembo, the director of Industry Affairs and Content Development at UCC, expressed his admiration for the creativity displayed by the Northern region’s filmmakers.

He commended their work on sound and emphasized the beginning of a remarkable journey for the region’s film industry.

Ruth Kanyana, one of the competition’s judges, reflected on the growth and capacity building of Uganda’s film industry over the past decade.

She praised the Northern region for their remarkable achievements and predicted a future of exceptional films that can compete on both local and international stages.

The Regional Short Film Competition will continue across the remaining regions of Mbale, Mbarara, and Masaka.
